Kekionga Plein Air Event
Artist Information
Welcome to the 4th Annual Kekionga Plein Air Event sponsored by the Fort Wayne Artists Guild. All of our activities take place in downtown Fort Wayne, including the Arts Campus, Promenade Park and The Landing. We are excited to welcome you to our Covid sensitive outdoor event. Face masks, hand sanitizing and social distancing measures are strongly encouraged.
Arts Campus Map: A map will be provided. Available parking is reflected Monday-Friday until 5 PM.
Check In: Check in at the Kekionga registration table, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, 311 E. Main St. An unlimited number of substrates may be stamped. FWAG volunteers will be available Thursday 7-noon and 1-4 PM, Friday 7-12 and 1-5PM and Saturday beginning at 8AM. Pre-registrants attending the Wednesday events may have canvases stamped that day. Quick Draw participants must be stamped Friday evening beginning at 5:30PM. For the Paint the Campus Event participants must get stamped with Saturday’s date.
Painting Hours: Painting may begin any time after stamping and continues through 4PM Saturday when competition paintings must be submitted.
Painting Locations: Artists may paint throughout the city and surrounding Allen County. Check with volunteers for suggestions or directions to specific locations. For your convenience maps have been included with your event materials. Please be respectful of private property and ask permission.
Artlink Exhibition: “Moments: The Plein Air Movement” featuring Brienne Brown, Nancy King Mertz and John Lasater will be open during Kekionga. Artlink is located across Main Street from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Meet the artists during Kekionga on Saturday 10-6PM.
Pre-Registration Events - Wednesday, August 26
FORT WAYNE MUSEUM OF ART, 10 AM - 5 PM
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art will host Arts talks/demos by Nancie King Mertz and John Lasater from. There will be two sessions: 10 AM-1 PM and 2-5 PM. Free admission to registered Kekionga artists. Show your badge and if you are a FWMoA member please let them know at the front desk.
Nocturnal Plein Air Paint out at The Landing, West Columbia St., from 7-10 PM.
Promenade Park Exhibition and Sale – Thursday August 27
PARK FOUNDATION PAVILION, 4 – 9 PM
This year we will host an exhibition and sale at the Park Foundation Pavilion at Promenade Park. Promoted by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, each artist may submit one painting, framed and displayed on artist’s easel. Art will be featured in the FWAG online gallery, please submit a jpeg with title, medium, and price by August 15. This painting does not have to be created during Kekionga. Sales for this event will be handled by FWAG with a 10% commission. Drop off 4 PM. Pick up 8 PM. Light snacks will be served.
Kekionga Quick Draw – Friday August 28
ARTS CAMPUS PLAZA, 5:30 – 8 PM
Quick Draw participation is included in the registration fee, so come out and paint! Painting is limited to Freimann Square. Painting for Quick Draw begins at 6PM and the paintings are submitted for judging at 7:30 with awards at 8 PM. Stamping for Quick Draw starts at 5:30 PM. Kekionga Quick Draw: $500 in cash awards.
Kekionga Competition – Saturday August 29
ARTS CAMPUS PLAZA, 10 AM – 6 PM
All work must be created in plein air by the artist without mechanical or photographic assistance.
All work must be completed 95% on location.
All work must be stamped with the stamp visible when submitted for judging. We will make no exceptions.
Competition works may be submitted until 4 PM on Saturday.
Competition entry must be framed and displayed on your own easel. A table will be available for framing.
Your name and title must be attached to the back of the piece and your assigned number placed on the front. Labels and numbers provided.
Do not sign or price your work prior to the competition.
During judging artists are invited to an informal gathering on the Ft. Wayne Museum of Art patio.
Bring your work to share.
Judges for our event are Nancy King Mertz and John Lasater.
Kekionga Prizes
Plein Air Competition: $500 each to top five paintings, as selected by judges.
West Central Neighborhood Association: $500 to the best painting of their historic neighborhood as selected by the judges. Maps available at registration. This painting is due at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
People’s Choice Prize: $250, location to be announced, due Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
Winner Selected by public vote Saturday.
Paint the Campus: Prizes donated by our sponsors with a total value of $500 will be awarded.
Selection made by judges.
Kekionga Purchase Awards
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art: $1,000 and $500 Purchase Awards.
Brotherhood Mutual: $500, location to be determined.
Purchase Award: $500 for painting the home located at 2220 Kensington Blvd., Fort Wayne,
as selected by the judges.
Kekionga Plein Air Painting Display and Sale
All paintings created during the event may be sold by the artist.
Any sale processed by the Guild is charged a 10% commission. No prior work, please.
Artists are responsible for providing an easel to hold their paintings.
Display and sale will be after the Competition and concludes at 6 PM.
The Fort Wayne Artists Guild would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the participants in our Kekionga Plein Air Event in conjunction with the Taste of the Arts Festival in Fort Wayne. We had a great time with 55 registrants painting in Allen County. We were featured on the front page of the Journal Gazette on Friday and the front page of the metro section on Sunday. It was a beautiful three days of painting. Thank you again for joining us.
